On September 4, 2024, an unexpected incident at Comerica Park in Detroit highlighted the growing need for robust airspace management in urban areas. During a Green Day concert attended by over 30,000 fans, an unauthorized drone flight caused a 10-minute interruption, raising concerns about public safety and event security.

The image from our AirHub® Portal software below clearly shows the flight path of the unauthorized drone over Comerica Park during the concert timeframe, demonstrating the precision, effectiveness and scope of AirHub® Portal, which neatly combines the functions required to plan, operate, detect, and safely manage drones in one convenient application.

GreenDay Drone Flight Path5

The Green Day concert incident unfolded when security personnel spotted a drone flying over the crowd, prompting them to quickly usher the band offstage as a precautionary measure. The Detroit Police Department (DPD) swiftly responded, detaining the suspected drone pilot and initiating an investigation that has since been taken over by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Green Day later addressed the incident on social media, stating, "Stadium security had us clear the stage while they dealt with a potential safety issue. DPD quickly resolved the situation, and we were able to continue. Thanks for understanding."

While such incidents are relatively rare, they underscore the critical importance of proper airspace education, awareness, and management, especially in densely populated urban areas and during large events. This is where Airspace Link's AirHub® Portal comes into play.

AirHub® Portal, our FAA-approved platform, could have provided invaluable real-time assistance in this situation. Here's how:

  • Pre-emptive Risk Assessment: AirHub® Portal offers pre-flight risk assessment tools that could have alerted authorities to potential drone activity in the area.

  • Real-time Detection and Encroachment: In partnership with partner radar and transponder technologies, AirHub® Portal can detect and track both cooperative and uncooperative drones within the AirHub platform. This capability would have allowed security personnel to identify the unauthorized drone quickly and precisely.

  • Pilot Identification: The platform's integration with FAA systems could have aided in swiftly identifying the drone operator, potentially preventing the need for a concert interruption.

  • Automated Airspace Authorization: AirHub® Portal provides FAA-approved B4UFLY and LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) services, ensuring that only authorized drones operate in controlled airspace. The stadium TFR listed during this major event feature could have prevented the unauthorized flight altogether.

  • Historical Data Analysis: As evidenced by the flight data captured in our system (see image), AirHub® Portal provides detailed historical traffic information. This data is crucial for post-incident analysis, audit, and future event planning.

While the incident at the Green Day concert was resolved without harm, it underscores the importance of comprehensive, city-wide drone management solutions. This is where Airspace Link's FlySafe Program comes into play.

Powered by our FAA-approved AirHub® Portal platform, FlySafe empowers cities and communities to safely integrate drones into their airspace. Participating FlySafe communities can publish and disseminate airspace rules, advisories, and ground risk details. They can also provide drone route optimization based on real-time hazards and regulations, significantly enhancing safety for all residents. This turnkey solution helps governments publish drone rules, identify safe flight areas, and enable new economic opportunities. By implementing FlySafe, cities like Detroit can proactively manage their airspace, potentially preventing incidents like the one at Comerica Park and ensuring safer skies for all citizens.

As we continue to integrate drones into our national airspace and communities, tools like AirHub® Portal and programs like FlySafe will be essential in maintaining safety, compliance, and peace of mind for all stakeholders involved. From concert venues to city-wide initiatives, Airspace Link is committed to creating a future where drones and communities coexist harmoniously, unlocking the full potential of this transformative technology while prioritizing public safety.
